The “Dancing Bear” reflects the Shaman becoming the Bear through dance. This explains the almost human like stance of the Bear. The Shaman (the Medicine Man, Witch Doctor or Spirit Healer) was the mediator between the animal and spirit worlds. He or she would take on the power, through dance, of the animal that could provide the wisdom for that specific event. The artist captures the strength of the animal but retains the whimsical character of the dance.
