This view of Prague requires a leap of faith. It is as if the artist is standing upon the water of a river at the same eye level as those who are crossing the river on a broad stone bridge. The bridge, its statuary, the people walking to and fro across the bridge, the cluster of buildings that rise to the cathedral in the distance are all secondary in this image to the bridge sculpture in the foreground. On a pedestal above and adjacent to the bridge wall is the stone figure of Christ being removed from the cross. The sculpture is a dramatic counterpoint to the quiet bridge traffic of horse and buggy and pedestrian, and to the steeped gables, domes and spires of the city. (Monica Jensen 02/09/93)
