portly figure of tophatted man (Louis-Philippe), hands folded in prayer, standing over a grave (Lafayette’s) and weeping, elaborate hearse and crowd of mourners in distance
Short, pudgy man in black suit and hat crouches with his head in his praying hands. Behind him a long silent processional moves toward a coastal town. An elaborate black coffin decorated with plumes and surrounded by flags is being carried by the throng. In the foreground is a tumbled grave marker and a tilted cross with a white circular object around it. (Virginia K. Anderson 02/13/95)
