The firm began as an exporter of English textiles and other goods to Turkey and gradually began to send Turkish carpets and other textiles to England. The family had five sons, all of whom were active in the business over the years. The years in trade to the 'Levant' resulted in an important collection of historic textiles. They also purchased pattern books from bankrupt textile companies and began to produce textiles in England the 1880s. They became one of the premier English textile companies, joining the Parker Knoll Group in 1964 and the studio continues today.
