Born in Flanders, Bologna was trained in the studio of Jacques Dubroeucq and had the advantage of study in Rome and Florence, where he was introduced to the patronage of the powerful Medici family. His known ceuvre includes various mythological and biblical figures, the bronze statuettes for which he is perhaps best remembered, and a large and impressive equestrian monument of Cosimo Medici, grand duke of Tttscany, in Florence, with which Antonio Susini is known to have assisted. A towering figure among sixteenth-century sculptors, Bologna created small bronzes that acquired a following which crossed over national boundaries. He died in Florence, having spent most of his vocational life in Italy, an influential sculptor at the center of a busy workshop.
