Bequest of Thomas G. Fowler

The doll exhibits simple engraving, suggesting the attribution to Substyle A. Incised lines decorate the face, chest and back indicating tattoo lines and possibly a garment and/ or necklace. Ears have been realistically rendered and protrude slightly from the side of the head. There appears to be slight deterioration on the tip of the nose but otherwise the figure is in excellent condition. The overall patina is dark brown to black. Note: For comparable pieces see “Ancient Eskimo Ivories of the Bering Strait” by Allen Wardell. ISBN 0-933920-50-4.
