On a sandy shore Faust and Wagner are seated, their heavy robes bundled around them and their legs sticking out. Behind and around them are numerous figures -- male, female, young, old -- with one group holding hands in a circle; a windmill can be seen in the distance. Faust says: "Happy to be able to keep the hope of staying afloat on this ocean of error! The spirit spreads its wings well, but the body--alas!--has nothing else to add." (Virginia k. Anderson 01/21/94)
