Faust is seen in his study, one knee resting on a double-curved Roman chair with tasseled cushion, one hand on the table bearing books with a skull set on top. Faust muses, "Poor empty skull; what do you want to tell me with your hideous grin." An iron chandelier hangs above the table, a flame lit on one corner; small high shelf on wall holds small objects; elaborate chair is at one side, with window of circular glass panes behind. Table has woven cloth with fringed edge nearly touching floor, and a lectern for holding reading books. (Virginia k. Anderson 01/21/94)
