Marguerite is in prison, and Faust has come to see her in her cell. Faust holds her and pleads, " Return to yourself! A single word and you are free." But she pulls away from him. Mephistopheles, on the steps to the cell, looks out the barred window, and muses, "What useless words! What delays and uncertainties! My hairs are bristling: the dawn lightens the horizon."
