Faust approaches Marguerite on the street, with Mephistopheles in the background. Faust puts his arm around Marguerite's waist and asks, " My fair lady, dare I offer you my arm and escort you?" She looks uncertain. The street is paved with large flat stones, and lined with handsome houses, one with a balcony extending over the street . The building closest to the figures bears a religious figure under an elaborate upper section. ( Virginia K. Anderson 01/21/94)
