Chimei Hamada

Born 1917 in Kumamoto Prefecture (Kyushu), graduated from Tokyo Art College in 1939. Member of the Japan Art Association. Drafted into the Japanese Imperial Army while a student at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, Hamada was injured in 1945 and returned to his native region, Kumamoto Prefecture in western Japan. His wartime experiences had an indelible effect on his subsequent work, as seen in the Elegy of a New Conscript series, begun in 1950. Hamada's exhibition record is extensive and international, including a solo exhibition at the British Museum in 1980. Volk, Alicia. MADE IN JAPAN The POsrwar Creative Print Movement.
