Subject of lithograph refers to the massacre of an entire family on 15 April 1834, when authorities broke into an apartment in the Marais in search of a sniper and murdered all the inhabitants.
This was the last in a series of 24 lithographs, the last five of which were by Daumier, printed for subscribers to L’Association Mensuelle Lithographique, formed by Charles Philipon to raise money to pay the fines levied against him and his publication, La Caricature.
