Inscribed on the mat in Marcus Sopher’s hand : [Robt Dumesnil IX, 31 (i/ii), before the inscription: "Apud Carolum Losi Anno 1773] [Note: this is the original - ie. a Beatrizet restitution of an anonymous engraving and not to be confused with the various copies published by Thomassin or Duchetti (cf. Mariani La Fortuna di Michelangelo Fig 19 and Tunick Cat 5 no 148)]
There is a flaw, 5x5mm, in the L arm of the lower figure to the right; it is associated with a reddish stain; whatever the red material it has been partially removed with attendant paper and image loss; the image has been made up with graphite;
This work was published by Antonio Lafreri who, though French, worked in Rome from about 1544 to his death in 1577; refer The Engravings of Giorgio Ghisi, Lewis (New York: MMA, 1985), page 231;
